Add value to a multi dropdown if value doesn't exist yet

I want to allow users to add tags (characteristics) to products based on an existing list. If the characteristic does not exist yet, the user can add it. The chosen characteristic will then be available to others. (so source list should be updated)

Is there a best practice way to achieve this? I would rather not work with 2 different input fields.
