Best practices for updating app UI?

I have built a app that I consider to be a working prototype, with many workflows and API calls, while building this prototype, I spent very little effort on UI design.

I now want to update and improve the UI, and will exploring options to hire a designer to assist.

Does anyone have any experience doing this, integrating new UI design / elements with existing back end code?
