Copy is the Original when copying Data Type!?!?

Hi All,

I am pretty sure that I have found a bug - but don’t have time to properly validate because the extra work is has caused me is significant and I have a deadline. If anyone can replicate and submit a bug report that would be great.

I copied a data type and renamed the copy to a new name. One does not do this that often but I need to create a back up copy of record that had issues before erasing it from the original data type.

Anyway, what seems to have happened is that Bubble took the copy as the original -see image below. I did not realize this at first and changed a bunch of things. I am going to have to do a search to see which is more used and decide if I should go back and rename the copy to the originals name and make the modifications necessary to account for the different uses or change every entry to use the original that has been swapped out for the copy. This a HUGE pain in the ass either way, so wanted to flag others ASAP. There is a minute possibility that this was a mistake by me but I really don’t think so.

Thanks in advance for someone stepping up and apologies if no one is able to replicate the error.

Yeah, I just tested it when copying the ‘User’ dataType. This makes it easy to see that the one that shows up after that it in fact the original and not the new copy that I just made. Here is a short video that shows the issue: Loom | Free Screen & Video Recording Software | Loom

Hey @J805 ,

Thanks for jumping on this!

I had thought it actually said copy before I changed the name on what I thought was the original. So…this might be considered a poor UI/UX thing more than a bug. Would you agree that it is counter intuitive to do that?

But hold the phone!!! And, I just tested it on an little used data type in my app that has data privacy rules set on it. If the copy is the one that is on top, then …it is the copy and NOT the original that “keeps” the data privacy rules.

While I have you… do you happen to know of a way to search for elements and their related control panels that use a given data type? I can not figure out how to do this in the search (magnifying glass) on the editor UI.

Interesting. I still think it needs to be addressed. Bug or no bug. :man_shrugging:

I use ‘Uses Field’ a lot to find what I am looking for. Does that help? I wish the search was better. But that is the best option I normally find.

unfortunately - my data types have a LOT of fields so going field by field is going to be a major pain in the ass.
