That is what Lawyers and Courts are forâŚ
The looks of legal action are worse than the benefits that might come from it, though. It would show they donât have faith in their own platform. Theyâd probably be more interested in acquiring it to be able to control how itâs used rather than blanketly chasing everyone who tried to use it.
I have faith that Bubble does just want whatâs best for its users (the reason self hosting not being possible is just how Bubble is built)!
True, it is something that corporations and individuals consider is the optics of a legal case, the duration, and overall the cost benefit analysis of it. So, it is true that it is possible that if somebody other than Bubble were to build it and begin offering it to others as a service, that Bubble may opt to just buy them out rather than sue them for damages.
I imagine that if Bubble wanted that type of a service to be available, they would build it themselves as it is not overly complicated for them to train an LLM to translate the JSON into real code. I think though that Bubble has a business model that revolves around recurring monthly revenues, and not a revolving door of apps created and exported.
Could you imagine what that could do to a company that is heavily invested in the infrastructure of hosting apps, loses the recurring revenues of the hosting? I wouldnât say Bubble protecting their business throw a court case would show they donât have faith in their platform, but more show that they care enough to protect it. People who have 100s of millions to invest into companies are usually pretty serious about protecting those investments.
But again true, they would maybe just decide it easier to just buy the person out.
Yeah, youâre right. But I think that most people wouldnât export their app to host it. Itâs just for the peace of mind that if Bubble did screw them over, they could. Itâs kinda like how WeWeb technically generates code to export. Itâs just not very good / is machine generated. But that doesnât matter. Basically, insurance against Bubble doing a rug pull.
I havenât heard of anything like that ever going on before. I donât think that Bubble is taking down apps or anything that are not already somehow in violation of laws of some sort.
I think for anybody thinking through potential scenarios in which they may be forced off Bubble, it is most probably via a situation in which Bubble went under, and in that situation, they have already publicly stated it would become open source.
Nah, I mean another pricing update that makes it 10x more expensive / Bubbleâs reliability tanks etc
@boston85719 Or Bubble goes belly up and doesnât release our code.
