Log in users with nickname and not emails

Hi, I wanna build a chat room, where people can select one of the users online and message privately.

  1. How can I log in user just with a nickname and not with email/password?
  2. How do I build the private messaging text box? it supposed to be like in whatsapp (mutual messaging)
