Responsiveness Sucks

Hey folks! A quick chime in here: our team knows first-hand that responsive design is one of the biggest challenges faced by our users. Keep in mind that bubble.io is a Bubble app too! We do have a project in the works to rework responsive design that we’re making good progress on (it’s been mentioned in the community updates), so please keep an eye on this space for announcements about that. We hope you’ll like the new system once it’s available!

Agreed, although the point of us all being here is that we don’t code and don’t want to spend time on anything that’s not non-technical and completely intuitive

This may foot the bill for easy clicks and a lot of power:

I definitely feel the same way. I can put together a good enough desktop site, but I’ve just subcontracted for making it responsive.

Hopefully the upcoming update makes a difference!

This is exactly what I do :arrow_heading_up:

For people struggling with responsiveness in their web apps, try this:

  1. Set the page width to mobile.
  2. Design your page as compact as possible on the 380px canvas
  3. For your big groups, set the max width when the page is stretched to something like 200x
  4. For your small groups and buttons, set the max width to 100% (don’t use fixed width)
  5. Preview

Try playing around with that to get used to responsiveness settings. Upside, no problems when zooming in and out and using different screen sizes = no frustrations. Downside is you can’t make dashboards with non-slide out side menus.

To all the people saying that I just don’t understand how Bubble works, you can go ahead and email Bubble to request they cancel their upcoming responsive updates then. Because apparently there’s no need and it already works as it is suppose to and it’s just fine!

Ridiculous lol. There’s always room for improvement and from what I’ve read and experienced myself, this is absolutely an area that can be improved greatly for far less friction.

I’m not bashing the product. I’ve said more great things about it in this thread than bad. I’ve reiterated how amazing the things Bubble is able to do, and pin pointed my feedback at the responsiveness alone. If my initial post seemed harsh, that’s because I was in the heat of the stress of trying to make my app responsive with the limited tools. I made that clear by starting the post with “Vented Feedback”.

I also spent 2 years avoiding it, too. Earlier this year I gave it a try and it is surprisingly easier than I thought. Greg’s video and a couple of others helped a lot.

I summarized some of my learnings here: My learnings on responsive design

I agree that it is bad; it is extremely difficult to use and understand, and although it becomes much easier once you do, it is still much more difficult than it should be.

I ended up returning to bubble to develop apps because it is simply superior in several respects. I’m hoping everything is working properly now.
