Stripe subscription setup

Hello,
I am trying to set up stripe billing for my app. It’s a subscription with $0 monthly charge and recurring monthly metered usage sent by invoice. Stripe tells me the only way I can use metered billing is with a subscription. I have set up stripe and the plugin. I can add the customer to my stripe dashboard when I collect the cc info, but it will not subscribe the user to the product. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
