Updates to notes and style variable tab

Hi everyone,

I’m Lindsay, a product manager on the Core team at Bubble, and I’m happy to share a batch of small, quality-of-life editor updates to make notes and style variables easier to use day to day.

Let’s start with notes.

Notes updates

Last author and edit date

You can now see who last edited a note and when. If you’re working on a team, this makes it much easier to keep track of changes. No more guessing whether a note is outdated or who left that comment about the API call three weeks ago.

One thing to note: This information will appear on newly created notes and existing notes that are edited after April 2, 2026. Previous edit history on older notes won’t be retroactively populated.

Auto-close when clicking outside

The notes panel now closes automatically when you click outside of it. This removes a step from your workflow and keeps the editor feeling tidier as you move between elements.

Visual refresh

We gave the notes panel a light UI refresh, including a gray background that stands out more clearly against the white editor interface to make notes easier to spot and read at a glance.

Most recently edited ordering

When you’re viewing all notes, they now automatically sort by most recently edited, so you can be up-to-date with the latest notes from your team.

Style variables

We’ve also made a set of updates to the style variables subtab to make it easier to manage fonts and colors in the editor.

Drag and drop reordering

You can now drag and drop to reorder variables in the style variables tab so it’s easier to organize your list in a way that makes sense for your team.

Note: this does not work for Bubble default variables, only self-created ones.

Cleaner, more readable variable layout

We’ve refreshed the layout of the style variables tab so rows are cleaner and easier to scan. Variable values, descriptions, and controls are now presented in a more compact, readable way that reduces visual clutter while keeping important information accessible.

Built-in color picker when creating a color variable

When you create a new color variable, the modal now includes the color picker directly in the flow. Previously this wasn’t surfaced in the same way, so picking, previewing, and confirming a color as you create the variable is now much more straightforward.

Built-in font selector for font variables

When you create a new font variable, you can now preview your selected font in the modal and see it alongside the variable name for easy identification.

Search for font and color variables

You can now search within both the Fonts and Colors sections, making it much easier to find the variable you need without scrolling through the full list. This one is especially useful if your app has a lot of variables.

More prominent creation actions

“New font variable” and “New color variable” actions are now placed more prominently at the top of each section, so creating new variables is faster and easier to discover.

Both Notes and Style Variables had small friction points that added up over time, especially if you’re in the editor every day or working with a team. We hope this batch of improvements makes notes and style variables easier to work with.

Give them a try and let us know what you think!

Great update!

Small suggestion, add undo action to work properly in styles. When some edit is applied or delete is done here, undo do not works in this tab

Great work, reorder color variables is finally happening!

It would be amazing if Bubble introduced a theming feature for color variables. This would let us define different colors for the same variable depending on the theme (light, dark, or even custom themes) making design and theme management so much easier.

This is an example of a category of change that’s sorely needed to prevent new users from churning.

It’s similar to going to a high-end restaurant and seeing a broken door handle or a dirty bathroom. You just trust the establishment less, even though the food is actually very high quality. It also has the secondary effect of mildly annoying your established users on a chronic basis, which makes them more open to migration. Keep going until every broken “door handle” is fixed!

Edit: Looks really clean and the drag and drop feels great to use!

You mean you don’t love hitting move up and move down 25 times!?!?

Love it! Great job

Drag’n dropping the variables, love it!

Great updates! Fingers crossed for option set items drag/drop reordering :crossed_fingers:

More QOL updates! This should be happening at least once a week.

Love me some QOL updates to the editor - great work Lindsay and team!

One observation: The color variable search only goes off of name at the moment, not the hexcode itself. I can see both options being useful when you might want to find how many variables are using a similar color, but maybe a slightly different opacity, using a search keyword like “#0000”. This could turn up all variations of #000000 with varying opacity levels.

That’s awesome. Thank you for this great update.

Talking about this, do you guys plan to establish a way to change styles within contitionals of the elements instead of change each visual aspects of it individually?

This is awesome! Next up, importing styles from a CSV or something?

Didn’t notice this post but I did notice the nice polish on the color variables page so I was going to do a forum post to mention it then saw this

These are the little QOL things that do matter. Thank you
