I have been looking through this site and find it helpful, especially the components catalogue for web and mobile.
Such things that are helpful in there include the dimensions and use cases of each component. It has really shed light onto design.
It has been a bit hard for me to navigate but I figured out that this link:

Is a seemingly full list of components as seen below:
Which after clicking onto any of them brings you to a page with another section to click “Material Design Guidelines”
Which brings you to the information you’d most likely be interested in, as it goes into great detail about use cases, placements, do’s and don’t dos as well as the actual specs as displayed at top of post.
