I’ve seen designs move more toward a left navigation view, as opposed to a traditional top level nav view.
What’re you guys using in your apps? 
Left navigation.
Top / bottom real estate is more valuable to content. Not to mention how many times I’ve seen users with these types of setups - the last thing I want is to join that sea of toolbars.
