I have heard that windows is on a big move to popularise UWP. Will it actually replace traditional approaches including single platform iOS and android app development?

Nah, at least not in the near term. It does, however, make it easier to build stuff for Windows platform. Using the UWP framework, you can build software that pretty easily works across the world of Windows (mobile, desktop, tablet, Xbox, etc.) I think it’s a great idea. Well, at least until they try to start mandating it. It’s not perfect for everything, but it definitely has its uses.
