Google Geocode API: API keys with referer restrictions cannot be used with this API

My Google API Keys worked all along and now I get this message:

Google Geocode API: API keys with referer restrictions cannot be used with this API.

1. What is referer restrictions?
2. My API Keys have not changed for the past 2 months.
3. Did Google change something in their system?
