Icons in placeholders

I want to add an icon to a searchbox placeholder, but understand that isn’t possible with FontAwesome icons. Does anyone know of a workaround for adding an icon to a search placeholder?

I put the icon directly to the left of the search field and include text as placeholder. This seems to be a better UX imo since the search icon doesn’t disappear after they click into the box.
