This plugin analyses the binary-based (i.e. not text-based) file provided, more specifically its “magic number”, a small code within, to detect in a reliable fashion its extension (such as pdf) and MIME Type (application/pdf).

I am not used to APIs and am planning to try cloudconvert API for different file conversions. Would your plugin be necessary to achieve that (detect the file types before executing the conversion)?

I use it when you have signed URL’s (eg from Google Cloud Storage) and need to know the content type for file viewing.
