Add thing to database if it doesn't appear in search results

Add item to searchbox from the searchbox

Hi all, I can’t figure out how to add an item to a field from a search box. For example, the field to search is “Item” which contains Items 1 to 4. I would like the user to be able to add “Item 5”. Should I simply add an icon next to the searchbox with the workflow being something like when icon is clicked, create a new thing? Thanks!
