So I’ve been learning about design practices and using grids. Can anyone point me how to get my margin to be the same size as my gutter step? I have start with gutter selected, but it seems to cut the defined gutter step in half?

I am going through the exact same problem. It seems like the left margin is half of the gutter. You can remove that left margin if you uncheck “start with gutter”.
Also for some reason there seems to be no right margin. The right margin that you are showing in your image is just a continuation for “whatever fits” of the last gutter.
So I found a minor workaround but still flawed. You can switch the grid and gutter steps, but unfortunately the you cannot fill the grid part with a solid color to act as a gutter. It only outlines it
