Hiring Senior Developer (remote, flexible, $30k-$100k/year)

Hi everyone,

My agency, Not Quite Unicorns , is looking for a Senior Developer, to expand our team to 4 people.

About us

We’re a little different as we work on a fixed price model for new builds, and subscription based development for ongoing work. As an agency, this makes it easier for us to manage our work volume consistently, and for you, that means that the volume of work can generally be easily predicted and planned for. For our clients, it allows us to provide better value per $ by taking on a smaller number of clients, and minimising bullsh*t time spent dealing with everything that’s not actually building! Our clients particularly value our effective communication, our speed, and our expertise. The agency is owned by myself and our developers are currently myself and @nico.dicagno.

We have grown rapidly, launching just over a year ago, developing our pricing model in October, and becoming a Silver tier agency in April. We hope to become a Gold tier agency by October of this year. We have a consistent stream of work, and for a number of reasons, anticipate a further increase in this over the next few months.

Role

In this role, you will:

  • have the opportunity to build new client apps from scratch
  • be able to work on existing apps (some that you’ve built, and some built by others)
  • be able to develop a long term relationship with a client and learn their product and business deeply
  • communicate directly with clients to realise their vision

Compensation

Our pay structure is simple. You receive 70% of any client fee, net any fees we pay on your behalf. For you, this means that:

  • you get compensated fairly and predictably
  • we are locale agnostic - your work is equally valuable no matter where you’re from. We’re not like some places that will take five-figure sums for Bubble apps and pay outsourced developers in lower-income countries peanuts
  • it does not matter how fast or slow you are - your earnings will be proportionate to the value you create for our clients, and you’ll be incentivised to produce an efficient, maintainable app without taking shortcuts as you’d be working on the app in the future, so building tech debt would shoot yourself in the foot!
  • you are fully responsible for your own income - as long as you provide excellent value, the client will continue to work with us and you

A developer can reasonably handle 4-5 subscription clients @ $3k/mo. That means you’d net $8,400/mo or $100k/year. You will likely start off with just one or two lower-value clients, and your workload and compensation will grow steadily and proportionally when you’re ready. You can take on as little work as you wish, or as much as we have available, provided you’re able to balance it yourself without sacrificing the quality to existing clients.

Things to consider

  • this will be a part-time position initially, likely working on a full new build, as well as one or two subscription clients. The work can grow as you wish - you are welcome to apply to this if you do other Bubble work - you do not need to work for us exclusively, and will never have to if you don’t want to (but we think you will!)
  • you should only apply if you understand why we operate like we do, and get along with the philosophy of our business
  • you must have a very strong command of English and good, professional grammar, as you’ll be speaking directly with clients. We don’t waste time with project managers as our clients value a small team and being able to talk directly to the people that matter. Any European languages would be considered a bonus (most of our clients are from Europe and the US). In addition, any candidate fluent in an east Asian languages like Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, or Mandarin, would be at an advantage.

How to apply

Please complete this Google form . It’s very straightforward as we anticipate getting lots of applications and will only be able to speak to a handful. Please ensure you have read the job description in full.

We’ll contact you by email within 2 weeks if we would like to progress your application. If you applied for another developer position with us before, you are welcome to apply again.

We had over 100 applicants for one position last time, so if you’re really interested, please make sure you’ve read the description here, and fully understand our business, and value offering! We only hire the very best, and want you to show us why you’re one of them!

Any questions? Don’t hesitate to stick them below

There may be scope for two developers here, depending on how much workload the first would like to take on. Please keep applying if interested in joining a rapidly growing agency where you have the freedom to take ownership of your own work and get direct responsibility for projects.

Some projects we’ve worked on include:

  • B2B AI SaaS for civil engineering firms in Netherlands
  • Tax strategy and planning app for US accountants
  • Legal Edtech SaaS to connect graduates with jobs
  • Internal sales/PM/CRM/inventory tool for a trades business

You get the freedom to accept or decline working on projects so you can build a schedule and work pattern that works for you

For a number of reasons, our number of requests for both new builds and ongoing development subscriptions have increased a lot in the last couple of months, and we expect it to increase significantly more over the next few weeks and months so would love to have you on board if you want to be part of that!

Non-negotiables for applicants to be successful are:

  • Perfect command of English and professional communication
  • Bulletproof security practices and knowledge
  • Modular and intelligent approach to building maintainable apps
  • Commercial awareness to understand ours and our clients’ businesses

Hi folks!

We’re now a team of three developers including myself, and one designer. We’re now seeking another developer, for a mid/late September start. All the details above apply.

  • subscription clients with fixed, predictable income
  • work in your own time
  • lots of independence, as well as learning opportunities
  • can easily handle $100k/year (net) in clients
  • no location based pricing, work from wherever you want - your skill matters, not where you’re from

We’re looking for someone that can dedicate at least 15 hours per week. If you’ve already applied, I’ll be reviewing all existing applications again. If you think you have improved, you’re welcome to resubmit.

We’re trying to build the most talent dense Bubble agency that delivers the highest quality for clients and hope we can offer the best opportunity around for Bubble devs - please help me out by applying if you think you might enjoy this

Sending you a message:)

Hello everybody,

I have been working here at Not Quite Unicorns with George for the past 6 months and I just wanted to provide a glimpse into what it’s like working here - I honestly cannot give it higher praise. It’s been an all round amazing experience.

The subscription model is a win-win for everybody involved, it provides us developers with a consistent and reliable stream of work and the clients a constant stream of results. Nobody has to worry about repeatedly scoping new features, negotiating, sending invoices and generally dealing with all that painful stuff that takes time away from building and development. It also encourages and inevitably creates long-term and positive relationships between you and the client, which are not strained by constant negotiation. We’ve had many clients tell us that they don’t view us as freelancers or off-sourced workers - they view us as partners. NQU doesn’t believe in project leads as they can just create distance between the client and the developer. You’ll be the point of contact and lead developer of all of your clients and can expect to build a significant relationship with them.

We really value independent work - once you’re settled nobody at the agency is going to be constantly looking over your shoulder, and you’ll have the opportunity to build end-to-end solutions on your own without anybody telling you what to do. That said, the rest of the team is of course always just a message away! If you have any questions or want to discuss best approaches we’re here for that. Honestly its the best of both worlds.

Because of the above, we are currently only looking for a capable senior developer. NQU is trying to build a strong team of the best talent the Bubble ecosystem has to offer. If you believe you fit the bill, honestly don’t hesitate to apply! We can’t wait for you to join the team.

If you have any specific questions about the position, feel free to contact me. Doing so will not help your application, as it’s George going through the applications and I’m not directly involved. The only way to apply is solely through the application form. But I’m more than happy to answer any specific questions you may have, or feel feel free to post them before. Please don’t send me your portfolio.

Now I’ll go back to Bubbling  At NQU there is not a shortage of available work and opportunities - that’s not a problem you’ll have to deal with anymore.
