Unique Reference Number / ID

My app requires a unique reference number, or ID, for each submission by the user. At the moment, I am using “Do a search… :count” and “Do a search for ID… :last item+1” to list the submissions in numerical order, but I am finding this is causing delays in the process and I want to make it faster.
