“Professional” fonts vs Google fonts

I want to use a designer font (Gotham) hosted by a professional foundry—but not if it will slow down page loads. The Bubble Manual says an advantage of Google fonts is that they are so frequently used that they may have already been downloaded to the user’s computer. Google has something very similar to Gotham. Does anybody have any opinion on this?
