Redesigned property editor: Now on by default

Hi everyone,

I’m Lindsay, a product manager at Bubble, here with an update! If you open your app today (and you’re not already opted into the new property editor), you might notice something looks a little different: we’ve switched everyone over to the new property editor, with the option to toggle between both experiences.

We want to make sure you know what’s changed, what’s new, and how to switch back if you need to.

Why we made the switch

We’ve been running the new property editor in beta since December and iterating based on community feedback. Adoption has grown steadily and we believe it’s now ready for everyone.

There are also capabilities in the new property editor that aren’t available in the old one, and we want everyone to have access to them.

What’s only available in the new property editor

While the core editing experience carries over, a few things are new property editor only:

  • Dark mode: A long-requested update. Toggle it on from the moon icon at the bottom left of your editor sidebar.
  • Global saved expressions: Another highly-requested update that lets you define an expression once and reuse it across your app.
  • Add and edit workflow actions from the design tab: Reorder, add, and edit workflow actions from the property editor inline without switching tabs.
  • Drag-and-drop reordering: Functionality for conditionals, constraints, workflow fields, custom states, and more.
  • Searchable color picker: Quickly find the exact color variable needed

You can switch back anytime

We know switching to a different UI mid-project isn’t a small ask, and we’re not removing the old property editor yet. If you need to go back, you can switch back with the toggle at any point.

We’ll be keeping both available for now, though we do plan to phase out the old property editor down the line — we’ll give you plenty of notice before that happens, and be sure to take your feedback into account. All your work stays intact either way.

The community’s feedback has shaped the property editor throughout this beta, and that doesn’t stop here. If something isn’t working the way you’d expect, it’s most helpful to submit a bug report, otherwise, let us know here in the thread.

…which are awesome. I refactored an entire app to use these (and I generally don’t jump on the beta bandwagon). The app is now cleaner, easier to maintain, and has less redundancy.

@lindsay.esterman I am trying to use this, I really am, however whenever you go to grab an element or hit esc to unclick a group, the whole right side bar collapses and the entire page shifts.

Its extremely jarring and I lose where my mouse was and its very frustrating. I feel that this space should always be there even if nothing is selected.

Even worse when tabbing and escaping multiple items the page just constantly shifts

Edit 2: Happens everytime you delete an item also which is very frequent

Thanks for the feedback! Makes sense and we’re looking into a fix

If you click into background, you’ll see the background starting and ending colors. We’ll have a fix to make this more clear

There’s also a bug with changing borders if there is already a border style set as default. The conditional border settings won’t set.

It happens inconsistently so i cannot reproduce it yet.

Don’t know if it is related. But since yesterday my editor doens’t show the option to select the timezone of “current date/time” operators. For example:

This is supposed to subtract the hour from a fixed timezone from the hour of the users timezone. But I cant choose the timezone anymore.

Tested on the old and it still works:

That’s such a weak reason to force us into it. If adoption was widespread you wouldn’t bother prodding us.

Meanwhile despite there being too many bugs to count and the entire display being too small to see without squinting (at least for those who were born in the 20th century) this is being forced upon us and ever browser refresh (which is needed often when everything times out) we are back to this terrible editor which we then have to turn off and reload the page again…

Time to just use AI agents and stay away from the editor altogether. So much for bubble being the only visual AI editor… :exploding_head:

@code-escapee it’s actually not bad now and team is improving it daily so worth trying it again

Would it be possible to add a general setting to toggle this on and off? @lindsay.esterman

Don’t get me wrong! I’m open to change and I’m already using the new editor on new projects, slowly migrating my brain.

But for my long-term clients, I use the old editor almost on autopilot and work blazingly fast compared to a couple of years ago. That’s why I’d love to stop being prompted to switch all the time.

Something that I have noticed is I have a few projects that have multiple branches. It appears that the new editor is toggled on for some and not others. And when I switch between them it keeps changing me back to the new editor but also has the old editor and then I have to toggle it off and refresh.

The settings should cover the whole project if possible (for that specific bubble user).

Dark Mode needs to have better contrast. The midnight black and dark blue doesn’t work at all. Take a look at the chatGPT app or even the color of the old property editor. Needs to be charcoal and the blue needs to be lighter.
