I am very unhappy with the existing share plugin options (atleast with those that I know of). Do you know of any sort of way to be able to have a e.g. Whatsapp share button that then shares a link and a text to a selected person (as you would be able to do it on almost ever website out there) and also to be able to customize the design of the share buttons?

You can just do this manually with HTML / JS. Are you familiar at all with those?
That way you can just design the button exactly as you like either by using a stylised button element or even a group with icons and text inside.
You then just need to extract the script from this example and use the toolbox plugin to trigger the script.
