This answers your question. This change doesnt affect small apps, like SPA with few workflows, DBs and Reusables. But when things get serious (200 features+), this change implicates a nightmare of productivity loss.

All the team is saying is “you have to be organized”. Yes, we are organized. Speaking for my self, my workflows are organized in folders, I use reusables, I use custom events, I use backend workflows. I just have many of them, not because I am “not organized”, but because I have a complex solution that provides my users with 200+ features.

This explains the huge frustration you read in this forum : it seems like this change is made to comply with the needs of small apps (like yours) and totally neglect the complex app needs (especially the ability to switch at a glance between 1 and 360 degrees, big picture when needed, zoom in details when needed). Yes the new old design was not goodlooking, yes there was a lot of grey, BUT, it was EFFICIENT, and as a developer, that’s what you’re looking for.

Hope this helps you better understand the non-stop complaints you’re reading in this thread everyday since the minute the the new UI was launched.

Oh, and the fact the community itself had to develop on ITS OWN and FOR FREE a tool that helps a huge amount of developers try to survive this mess, is in itself self-explanatory.

Here is a silver lining, 8-10 secs wf editor navigation delay down to 2-3 secs, and I pushed a little, now 1.5- 2 secs. I am still pushing it was 0.2 secs to 0.3 secs on the old editor. Directly go to bug report and just insist. In my experience the team has no idea about complex apps, you need to let them know, video helps a lot. But overall only the real thing that makes me frustrated is that the team really underestimates complex nature of humans

SendGrid has like 50 features and the parent company is publicly traded, are you sure about this?

Weird because the old WF editor was laggier than the new one for me. It would hang for 1-2 seconds when showing all WFs and the new one is just instant without any freezing/hanging. I think this is very system dependent.

Few things to consider, I use issue_checker off always, new editor is number of wf dependent ( number of conditions or number of wf actions inside irrelevant). Folders really speed things up. Below 200 wf’s now instant, above 750 still ways to go. Editing inside wf is somewhat clunky still relative to old one

Not sure what you call a large app or a small app.

Over the last 10 years, I’ve worked with Uber, Grubhub, and other apps that have millions of users…I consider those large apps.

My one SPA is to manage about 500 apartment units.

Users can browse available units and submit an online application, as well as download forms that are also needed.

The application is rather lengthy.

The property manager can manage the applications, apartment listings, add listings, edit listings, create online leases, have tenants sign the lease online, edit the lease, send tenants messages, handle monthly online rent payments, etc.

The lease is 15 pages long. I have begun to optimize that by breaking it down into even more reusable elements so my computer doesn’t slow down when I’m editing that feature.

Tenants have a profile where they can edit their details, view and print their lease, pay rent, and more.

So, for me, it’s a lot of moving parts.

Thankfully, as I said, I discovered reusable elements early on because it greatly helps with the speed of my site and also managing workflows.

Anyway, as I said (maybe in another thread), I think the new editor is a step forward and I think Bubble will work on the tweaks and improvements that need made as evidenced by some of the comments.

First off, complex app or number of features are irrelevant. One can have 2000 pages very complex pages, but that does not define the problem of slowness. Crucial part here it needs to be SPA or a page that has lots of workflows.

Yeah, but if you have 500 workflows on a page, you are doing it wrong.

Now, Bubble should still borderline cases with lots of workflows (acknowledging that most apps AREN’T built well), but if you’ve got 500+ on a page I don’t have much sympathy, and you can’t blame them for not testing extensively on that scenario.

Move things into reusable elements, it’ll be better for editor performance, maintainability, readability…

Yeah, next level. I am sick of this clout chasing by these agency owners. 60% disagreement on the poll, more than 5 very long very diligently written open letters, feedbacks and disappointment towards new editor. Very agressive pushbacks on clunkyness and productivity reduction. More than 10 person says how there is speed delays introduced in the new editor. Yes, bro you are the gifted one, we are all dumb here. Just leave us be, I am on contact with the team and try to solve the problems we dumb individual developers face.

but, I’m sure there are some problems as in your case.

Maybe you could post some of the problems you’re having and some of the more experienced agency owners like George and others could help you?

They’ve worked on and seen tons of Bubble apps.

I’ve gotten tons of good advice on the forum from others since I’ve started with Bubble.

Don’t extrapolate this kind of “stats”. You need to keep in mind that 90% apps didn’t opt-in at all…

It’s easy to make stats look good…

When this one said that more than 50% doesn’t approve it…

But even this poll will never give a reliable answer…

Well, Bubble is privy to live data, so I believe their poll.

The online poll didn’t even have 1% of the Bubble users involved…plus, I don’t know if it took into account the users with multiple accounts.

I’ve been seeing videos etc. and reading comments from some users that have been around Bubble for a while and they’re saying they like the change…not only because of it being more modern, but because of the features it sets up for. Many do say there are changes that need made…but, that is something Bubble will be working on.

This discussion will probably go on for a while…but, I don’t think Bubble will revert it. I do think they’ll tweak it and make changes based on the input they’re getting.

Being on dedicated, we were able to put off opting in to the new WF editor for a while. We just made the jump though and I’ve had a chance to get familiar with it.

As others have mentioned, this new format is much less visually digestible. It is less intuitive and feels cramped. It also makes poor use of the space in the workflow edit area. This is the crux of the issue with it in my opinion. A few quick things that could improve this:

  1. Just make font size bigger. There’s nothing to be gained by these tiny cramped fonts.
  2. The navigator on the left should be closer to the original box UI. Just make things a bit bigger.
  3. Same thing with the main WF Editor area. Why is each step so small and wide?? Just make each step taller and the font size bigger. So much easier to read/understand a sentence split into three lines of text than one long line spread across the screen.

Example:

This sentence…

I am the name of
a workflow action
in a Bubble app.

…is easier/faster to read, than this sentence…

I am the name of a workflow action in a Bubble app.

…despite being the same words.

This is because the three lines of texts are visually “chunked” and can be taken in without having to scan with your eyes. This is basic UI/UX.

The readability issues aside, I do think this is a good direction for the WF editor. Just feels really half baked and the UI/UX was designed by someone who has spent little to no time actually developing in Bubble. Seems like the goal was more to make something that looked pretty and opened up some new feature pathways, rather than focusing on providing a great UI/UX to Bubble devs staring at the editor all day.

In summary, I think this is a good and necessary direction, but the poor readability of the new UI/UX makes it exhausting to work in. Readability and “visual chunking” needs to be prioritized to move this new editor in the right direction.

Same boat, thought dedicated would let me dodge the pain until the kinks were ironed out, and then woke up to a fun slack message from @rico.trevisan that we had been infected.

I get the direction, I get the tech debt it probably eliminates, but at least make it easier to look at. The zoom in/out feature doesnt even persist. So i have to zoom into 120% every time i refresh just to be able to read the workflows.

It literally opens them up to lawsuits as it doesn’t meet the WCAG standards.
