[Feature update] Introducing app planning sessions: Shape your app plan before Bubble generates it

Hi everyone,

I’m Elisabeth, a product manager at Bubble.

Today we’re launching an exciting update to the AI app generation flow by introducing app planning sessions! Starting now, you can fully shape your app plan before anything gets built. Right after you submit your prompt, Bubble asks clarifying questions, acting like a partner helping you think through key decisions for your app, and lets you add context, refine details, or upload images — so the app it generates is fully fleshed out and closer to what you had in mind, ultimately saving you time down the road in the building process.

What’s new

Now when you generate an app with AI, you go straight into a planning session instead of waiting on a loading screen while Bubble processes your prompt.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Answer clarifying questions: Bubble looks at the assumptions it made from your original prompt and asks you about them, rather than guessing what needs refining. You can answer by selecting from the suggested options or writing in your own response.

  • Refine anything: You can adjust anything about your app plan, from a specific feature or user story to the overall vibe and visual style of your app.

  • Upload images: You can upload images to show a look or style instead of describing it in words. It now gets factored in when your app is first generated, rather than something you can only add later once you’re in the editor.

Shaping your plan this way is always optional! Click the Generate button in the top right corner at any time to exit the planning stage and begin the generation process.

Why we updated the app generation experience

We believe that you should have ownership over your app plan, with Bubble helping you shape it before generation, and that building your app should start the moment you submit your prompt rather than once you’re in the editor.

An example of what this looks like in practice: if you prompt Bubble to build a booking app for a gym, it might ask whether members should be able to book recurring class series or only single sessions. If you choose recurring, your app plan updates to include recurring bookings and a schedule view, so the app that gets generated accounts for this product decision upfront.

This sounds quite promising, especially for Bubble newcomers. I’ve felt for a long time that most AI “prompting” these days is the wrong way around (“ass backward” as my old man would say). I view AI assistants and agents as very knowledgeable partners / consultants. Should not the “domain expert” be the one doing most of the prompting and providing guidance along the way?

Outside Bubble, this phenomenon has been especially evident with image generation. It’s like one needed to be familiar with the lingo and concepts of a cinematographer just to get a reasonable facsimile of what’s in their head.

Anyway, nice job, Bubble team. I hope it lives up to expectations.
