Hiring designer for development agency

Hi everyone,

My agency, Not Quite Unicorns, is looking for a part-time designer.

About us

We’re a little different as we work on a fixed price model for new builds, and subscription based development for ongoing work. As an agency, this makes it easier for us to manage our work volume consistently, and for you, that means that the volume of work can generally be easily predicted and planned for. For our clients, it allows us to provide better value per $ by taking on a smaller number of clients, and minimising bullsh*t time spent dealing with everything that’s not actually building! Our clients particularly value our effective communication, our speed, and our expertise. The agency is owned by myself and development is currently done by myself and @nico.dicagno.

To support both new builds and ongoing development, I would like to optionally include design services in our product offering. As such, we are looking for a part-time designer.

Role

In this role, you will:

  • be responsible for a fixed number of clients who opt to include design services in their initial builds or ongoing development
  • complete wireframes, full designs and redesigns for Bubble pages, new features, and anything else Bubble app related that the client requires
  • optionally implement front-end designs in Bubble (no logic/workflows)
  • communicate directly with clients to realise their vision

Pay

Our pay structure is simple for designers and developers. You receive 70% of any client fee, net any fees we pay on your behalf. For you, this means that:

  • you get compensated fairly - we’re not like some places that will take five figure sums for Bubble apps and pay outsourced developers in lower income countries peanuts without you knowing how much the client paid for your work!
  • it does not matter where you are from or how fast you are - your earnings will be proportionate to the value you create for our clients
  • you are fully responsible for your own income - as long as you provide excellent value, the client will continue to work with us on design
  • where’s the other 30% go? NQU’s costs in acquiring the client, advertising, my own time for managing you and the client, and our software costs.

We have not decided the monthly fee yet. This will be decided once we select a designer and after discussing with clients. Developers can reasonably handle about $10k/mo of clients full-time. As design is a new offering for us, it’s hard to say how much you could expect to earn, except that it’ll of course be proportional to your work. We estimate that we’ll include just one design package at about $500/mo, and new build designs will be about $1k.

Things to consider

  • this will be a part-time position, and I cannot imagine it becoming full-time at any point over the next year - our agency is growing fast, but Bubble development remains our main offering. It is likely superior to traditional freelance gigs as the income is much more regular.
  • you should only apply if you understand why we operate like we do, and get along with the philosophy of our business
  • you must have a strong command of English and good, professional grammar, as you’ll be speaking directly with clients. We don’t waste time with project managers as our clients value a small team and being able to talk directly to the people that matter. Any European languages would be considered a bonus (most of our clients are from Europe and the US).

How to apply

Please complete this Google form. It’s very straight forward as we anticipate getting lots of applications and will only be able to speak to a handful. Please ensure you have read the job description in full.

We’ll contact you by email within 2 weeks if we think we might be able to work together for further questions or an interview.
