My Search for a "High-Quality" Bubble Developer: A Cautionary Tale

Okay, so this is how I read this thread.

First mention from OP of any type of rates (keep in mind at this point in thread there was never a single number mentioned for what rates he had offered, just a bunch of assumptions that it was low)

So up to this point in the thread, no numbers of an hourly rate expressed anywhere - so absolutely no reason for people to assume he is paying a low rate and so he ‘gets what he pays for’. And in fact, for me personally, I see the example of $100/hour as a high enough rate that even if the ‘half of that is lost’ is meant to imply savings for the employer, that hourly rate would still be $50/hour - equivalent of $100K / Year - pretty decent salary by any standard.

This is the next mention of any hourly figure. It does a good job of expressing a range of hourly rates, but again, is using an assumption that the OP offered a rate of $20/hour.

This is the next mention of $20/hour - which again, at no point has the OP expressed what they offered, and is just an assumption of what was offered, or perhaps just used as an example of a lower hourly rate that may be a low enough point that the talent available is not high…but does a good job of prefacing that statement by acknowledging that in many parts of the world, that rate is quite high and should be sufficient to attract more talented individuals.

For me, I could only imagine the OP was following advice he found on the forum of how to hire

I’ll highlight the entire quote so as to not take it out of context

That entire quote was altered after it’s initial posting as I pointed out in that thread from which it came that the rate of $30,000 a year in SEA was below actual rates since I’ve lived here for 13 years, I felt I had a pretty good understanding of the actual rates and personally felt that $30,000 a year was much less than actual rates being paid for ‘senior developer’.

So, let’s unpack that for a moment. $30,000 / year full time for a ‘senior developer’ is…wait for it…$15.625/hour when providing for a 4 week paid holiday per year (as is standard in USA - OP country of residence I can only assume as he has not stated that in this thread)

Now, let’s assume that OP was not looking for a full time ‘senior’ developer and was just looking for a competent intermediate developer (again all we can do is assume as the OP has not stated this), with the guidance they may have found on the Forum, they could have assume naturally that an intermediate level developer from SEA could be paid half that of a ‘senior’ developer from SEA and be able to get good talented developers from SEA for $10/hour???..I don’t know as the OP never stated if he did that or not since he never stated where all of the developers he hired came from, only that one was from India (close enough to SEA rates of pay - perhaps even less)

Final Thought

At what point was it imagined that the types of replies that blame the OP for offering a low rate, which is an accusation made with complete lack of evidence, expected to help the OP understand the level of professional some Bubble developers have?

Shouldn’t all of the replies from professional Bubble developers have been less accusatory, and aggressive and more sympathetic and reassuring and perhaps helpful, so as to make the OP feel better about using Bubble and hiring bubble developers?

@Dog-Tag Thank you for taking the time to post this as a cautionary tale for others. It serves as a helpful expression of ‘what to look out for’. And sadly there are not many ways to know if the developer you hire has the type of professionalism so as to avoid things like what you experienced at any price point.

For instance, this above, can happen at any price point. Developers will always have their own preferred way of doing something, and sometimes they put the cost of altering an application that might already work well, to fit the developers ‘way of doing things’.

Nobody should be assuming things and using those assumptions as basis for making their points in a discussion. What a professional Bubble developers role should be on the forum is helpful, not confrontational, accusatory or reproachful.
