Hello everyone - excited to announce that App Text is now fully supported on Mobile!
Here is a walkthrough video of some of the new UI we’ve introduced to handle some mobile specific stuff. You can also find more context in the documentation.
A quick note on some of the differences between how App Text works on mobile vs web:
- On mobile, it is best practice to reference the device language for any localization, not a setting on the app itself. Users are able to set multiple device languages on their phone but only the primary will be referenced. As such, we added some new UI to handle this
- In the mobile settings tab, there is a new Supported Languages section. By default, the apps primary language will be set here
- You can also add as many supported languages as they would like. Ideally, your are defining app text translations for all of the languages you are choosing to support.
- When the language of a device matches a supported language on the app, the proper app text translation will be used. If the language does not match, then the apps primary application language will be used
- There is an added complexity here. A lot of base languages have dialects. These are seen in the language codes, for example fr_fr and fr_ca which is french french and french canadian. These are both codes that can be set on bubble and a device.
- When supporting a language in the supported languages tab, you’ll chooses a base language, and then add any additional dialects you want to support
- There is a new “fallback” setting to handle the case where the device language is only a base language, like “fr” - since Bubble always adds a dialect to the language code.
- You will need to do an OTA update (or a new build) for any new supported languages, and a full build if you add any new app texts for system things like the photo permissions or push notification permissions
