Piece of advice for the owner of Bubble.io

Dear Bubble.io Owners,

After 25 years of working in the software industry, it is my pleasure to offer a piece of advice for the owner of Bubble.io.

Microsoft, a major player in the software industry, has transitioned its strategy from closed code to open-source code that can operate across various platforms like Linux and Unix, akin to Java. This change has enabled Microsoft to claim a significant share of the software market, contrary to what it had planned and expected in past years. This shift prevented it from losing market share.

My suggestion for Bubble.io is to shift from retaining and concealing code generation to allowing developers to export the code from Bubble.io. This would grant developers the flexibility to deploy anywhere. Platforms like FlutterFlow.io and WeWeb.io already provide this feature for the front end.

Consider having a tool like Bubble.io that can export both front-end (React.js) and back-end (Node.js) code, with the possibility of adding more languages in the future like Python, Java, or C#. Granting developers access to the source code would boost Bubble.io’s market share, as many developers would be inclined to work with conventional code in a contemporary manner.

Bubble.io could modify its business model to recuperate revenue from customers who opt not to deploy on its platform by incorporating various billing solutions. Ultimately, this shift could lead to a mutually beneficial outcome for all parties involved.

Best regards,

It’s been said a lot, and it’s not happening, so best accept it and make the most of the advantages Bubble brings, or go somewhere else if it’s a deal breaker for you

The market will change in the next few years due to AI. If you are not aware of this change, it may cause you to lose the business you have built over the years easily within months.

Here are Microsoft’s top software offerings:

Windows
Outlook.
OneDrive.
Microsoft Teams.
OneNote.
Microsoft Edge.

Are any of them open source?

Also most people are aware of AI. Why do you think making things open source would have any effect if AI can do things better in 5 years anyways?

Unless AI can also manage and troubleshoot a full stack setup on the fly, Bubble has nothing to worry about.

All you mentioned are final products for users. You can see the change in Microsoft’s strategy with MS SQL and .NET Core running on Linux, which are development tools, not final products. Microsoft resisted for many years to let them run outside of Windows, but in the end, Microsoft listened to the customers and the market and changed their strategy. I give Microsoft as an example of how a company can change its strategy after many years of rejection.
