No new workflow editior!

It would be great to offer a toggle between the former and the new WF interface.
Tastes vary, and personally I’m not a fan of the redesign.

I’d love the ability to switch back to the original UI.
We can have simple (new) and advanced interface (old)

My feedback on the former UI (compare to the new one) :

  • workflow from left to right (easier to read)
  • bigger square for action (easier to grab)
  • full colors on action (not a little icon) (easier to manage)
  • full page on workflows when we don’t use folders (easier to work on a big screen)
  • fewer menu options (easier to read)

Sorry, I failed to read that…

Anyway, my thoughts…I think it’s a much cleaner design.

I can follow my WFs easier from top to bottom.

The old design just seemed cluttered and all boxed up on top of each other.

Also, the new design I think will allow for a lot of future enhancements should Bubble decide to implement some.

I really think if people give the new design an honest chance they’ll end up liking it better.

My thoughts on this too. I thankfully haven’t experienced any bugs detrimental to my productivity but that’s just me.

Maybe cause I’ve been using it since it was first released as an experimental feature I don’t feel much resistance.

Though it did force me to use folders and rename my workflows to make full use of the new view. Even then I find it good practice versus what I used to do (or not do in this case).

I will be in the “for” team… with a big “IF”. If this is to, in next year, bring new features like loops, conditionnal branching, parralel/sequential processing… I’m for. Actually, I like to see more triggers than before (I’ve increased the left space to maximum that is around 60% of the space.) I like to be able to rename folder and WF easily from left menu. But there’s not a lot of benefits that I found
What I wish

  • A Grid view for workflows (that will be similar to what the old designer was)
  • A group by element function. So we can see all workflow triggers related to one element.
  • Having the notes into a third tab instead of floating above the workflow editor and be able to have it open by default. Also, actually, if we swicth from a step to another and leave the note open, the note is not updated with the actual step data.
  • Allow to move left tab up to 70/75% of the screen width
  • Show the full conditions on trigger (in left tab)
  • One click to collapse or open folder. User actually will try double click and get the rename function. This make sense as in the design tab this is how it work, but when we open a group in design editor, we don’t need to click on the arrow, one click on the group name do the same.
  • Option to “left-align” the workflow (right side) instead of just centered. Will make more sense too if we have sticky notes tab and (from what we see in some videos) the editor box sticky.
  • Be able to select multiple workflow trigger for color, dragdrop in folders…
  • More function in the contextual menu on right side (workflow editor) that are available on left side (folders) (mostly for triggers)
  • When using search, this doesn’t open the left side as it should. This only show the right workflow tab. This should work like it is in designer tab
  • Add a search bar on top of folders tab like in design tab
  • Colors for folders

I believe they are all easy improvment to implement. However, there’s some more functions that are requested that I really believe Bubble need to work on in near future. This is how Bubble will add value to this new workflows editor.

I would like to see a left to right view that can take up the same screen real estate as the original layout, which makes it easier to see everything at a glance (this includes details such as conditions on workflow triggers or actions, seeing all triggers at once and seeing all actions of a selected series at once.

What Bubble could do to innovate the original view is upgrade the look, so it is more sleek and modern, and maybe change control the developer has of the view they see, so can when selecting a specific series by clicking the trigger box, it opens the workflow series as it currently does, but maybe we get control of focusing just on it and not seeing the noise from all other triggers still in view.

I think ultimately people want more actionable details visible at a glance, so we can work as fast as we can. I think that the ‘need’ for a top to bottom view is not here yet (conditional branches) so it would maybe be good to work on providing a view selection similar to browser dev consoles, to be bottom horizontally, or right vertically. I couldn’t imagine it being much more than some CSS tricks.

Just expand it to the right, it works like a regular window

Just wanted to pile on to say that I too gave the new UI a genuine try and I switched to the old version as I found it difficult to keep track of what step did what, especially for complex workflows with a lot of steps. My screen is wider than it is tall, if you are looking for ways to IMPROVE usability for complex applications like you say, I wonder why you decided to switch to vertical - seems counter intuitive.

I don’t mean expanding the window to the right. I mean expanding the collapsed groups with the events, like in the picture below. Having to manually open all of them can be tiring. A shortcut would be nice.

I think this screenshot sums up one of the biggest issues power users or anyone working in Bubble daily will experience.

@fede.bubble please please just at least change the number of actions (not helpful) to the condition that the workflow runs under, as it did previously.

BWF Copy/paste keyboard shortcuts no longer work (Widnows Chrome).

How do you search for a workflow?

You have to manually open every workflow folder on the left, then use ctrl + f / cmd + f. There’s no native way to search or have the folders open by default.

Edit: Nevermind they added a search at the top which I haven’t seen!

you can search already with the search in the dropdown menu that list all action. The only issue is this doesn’t open the left side like it is in designer tab (but this was also an issue when they first launch the new designer layout)

I’m used to it now that I’ve been extensively working with it. The new interface forces you to categorize your workflows in folders, otherwise it’s a nightmare working with multiple apps.

Still can’t say it’s better than the old interface at this stage. Perhaps its a bit more friendly for new users.

There’s definitely a way. Thanks @Jici for chiming in!

Hi everyone. I highly recommend checking “Show Conditions”, and “Grid View”; Then drag the left section to the maximum. I don’t understand why they didn’t make this as default.

It does NOT solve all issues, but at least gives us a way to keep working while they solve the other issues.

I do appreciate that they’ve finally added a confirmation before deleting a workflow with a missclick.

I’m mistaken thank you!

According to the Bubble team as they explained it when they first started changing it, one benefit is the eventual ability to add loops, conditional branching, and specify parallel vs. serial actions in workflows. I wonder if the extra white space won’t always be enough once these extra features are activated, depending on a particular person’s style of development. Of course, until at least one of these features is active, the new editor is of little benefit to many of us.

Here’s Bubble’s complete vision of the improvements they envisioned with the new workflow editor: https://youtu.be/IT0AYjrgFZ8?si=yokLcyNJzaUN9yO9&t=615

Thanks for sharing @AndyMountHood

@fede.bubble - constructive feedback from someone who’s been building on bubble for 10 years. The three things I really miss about the old experience:

  1. Being able to view the actions within a workflow from left to right while being able to see dozens of actions at once. This experience allowed me to quickly scan and identify where an action may need to be added, deleted, or reorganized. In the new view you can only see 5-6 actions at once, it reads top to bottom instead of left to right, and you have to scroll to view all of the actions. The cognitive load is much higher than it was before.

  2. How the old experience grouped workflows with the same element action next to each other (I.e. when this button is clicked and the user is logged on vs when this button is clicked and the user is not logged in)

  3. How the old experience felt so familiar having built on it for so long. It would be great if we could merge some of the pre-existing concepts that folks liked about the old editor into the new. For example, a big theme in the feedback on this thread is showing more actions for a workflow at once in a left to right view.

Maybe a good way to ask for feedback in this case is, what do we miss about the old experience that could potentially be incorporated into the new?

Did you tried the compact mode? For me I can see up to 15 actions on my screen. You can also zoom out… but it’s could be too small. But I wish to also have a similar view that we got before even with compact mode.
