Sending data to pop up from inside a reusable element

I have a reusable element in a repeating group that I’m using as a menu for each item.

When clicking on this reusable element I’d like for it to send current cells data to a pop up and open it.

Is there any way to to that from within a reusable element without sending data through a URL?

I believe you can assign the reusable element a data type. Then when you drop it in the repeating group, I think you can assign it to the current cells data when you drop it in the cell. Did you try that yet?
