Cold Calling vs. Cold Emailing

Questions regarding Cold Calling & Cold Emailing, Generally Speaking.

What works better?
What may be more appealing to business owners?
Strategies, etc.
Any other comments.

Thank you.

I get both at my dayjob and I ignore them all  I often find them inauthentic, while sttempting to be personal by scraping something from our company website and including it - that annoys me even more because they often get the facts wrong.

What has worked on me? Meeting at trade shows, genuine real emails (not automated), being introduced by a common connection. But mkre often than not, I find them online via LinkedIn, Google search, etc. When I have a need, I try to seek it out.

Any email I send out would be hyper personalizedā€¦Iā€™d spend 10-15 minutes finding something on their website and work off that, and only if I can genuinely help them.

Iā€™m assuming youā€™re saying here to use cold emailing thatā€™s personalized ? (In terms of choosing between the two: calling and emailing.)

Technically yes, but if youā€™re not careful it can still look like automated spam. Itā€™s helpful if you know of someone there you can mention, or even if someone at another company mentioned them that you could reference. Based on my own reference, I donā€™t like it seeming like I was reached out to as another name on a spreadsheet.

I will keep that in mind.

Any recommendations about tone, length, etc?

Tone: this is where the research or personal connection comes in. Try to get a sense of the company culture and how they communicate based on their website and socials, and match that. Length: short, sweet, and to the point!

Great point about tone! Something I will try.

Iā€™ll post a couple scripts for cold emails in here later, if you could give me some feedback on those that would be great.

Hereā€™s one I whipped up. Itā€™s short and simple, but effective and straight to the point.

Not sure if this cuts it in terms of personalizationā€¦Iā€™m trying some other drafts to find the balance between personalization and length.

Subject: my name

Good Morning,

I noticed your website doesnā€™t have some features that most modern shops have and is lacking some essentials. Not sure if this is something you havenā€™t gotten to yet, but Iā€™ve got some examples of websites that would fit your needs. We can schedule an online meeting sometime and Iā€™ll show them to you.

Have a great day,

I get about 20 of these a day, and Iā€™ve never scheduled a meeting.

What would get my attention?

Hi Matt,

I got your info from Joe. I hear youā€™ve been looking for a way to have a more efficient approach on monthly reports by category. Iā€™ve developed a tool for this that Iā€™d love to show you. Iā€™ve shown it to (related businesses) and gotten good feedback, and can now count them as clients of mine. Iā€™d love to show you a demo or go into more detail of you have time - Iā€™ll follow your list of email, phone, or Zoom would be preferred.

Until then, heres a quick demo of what we can offer: (link)

And hereā€™s our website: (link)

Let me know if you have any questions.

The problem for me isā€¦these are my first clients. So I canā€™t use the testimony until Iā€™ve at least gotten one.

I havenā€™t had any in the past.

State what the missing features are to attempt to personalize it

Explain benefits of having these ā€˜missing featuresā€™

Provide links so they can check out if they are interested or not with explanation of what the feature is on the site they should be looking for

Nobody will schedule a meeting with you to be shown something they have no idea what it is, which is why I suggest the above.

Also, provide a link to your booking calendar so they can simply click the link and schedule if they are interested.

Also, provide some value to them, such as information, such as statistics on how these ā€˜missing featuresā€™ improve their business.

Do something for somebody in the Niche Industry you are focusing on and provide the work for free in exchange for the testimonial.

Would someone be hesitant to click the links from an unknown email that is eventually asking them to buy something?

Sure, somebody might be

would somebody be hesitant to pick up their phone with an unknown number?

Hereā€™s another draft:

Good Morning,

I was taking a look at your website and noticed that it looks pretty outdated. Thereā€™s also some missing information, which seems to be a problem for your consumers, as many of them are complaining of ________________ on your Google Reviews Page.

Iā€™ve got a couple templates that would solve those problems and would make it easier for your customers to _______________ (relate to issue theyā€™re experiencing from reviews).

If youā€™re interested, email be back and Iā€™ll provide more details as well as a meeting link for us to go over them.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Have a great day.

With this, Iā€™m addressing the personalization, as well as the links to examples that you mentioned. If theyā€™re interested, theyā€™ll ask for the link. (I donā€™t want these to get flagged as spam b/c of some company policy w/ links).

I received all 3 of these on Friday - all ā€˜cannedā€™, very automated (and yes I have dark mode on  ). In reviewing your latest draft, I still feel it lacks that personal touch. Try and let your personality shine through, and the ethos of you and your company.

I still feel ā€˜I was taking a look at your websiteā€™ is something theyā€™d have gotten at least a couple of times a day (my own experience below!), so Iā€™d still recommend having something to differentiate yourself.

Ah, I see. Looking at those, they all look like something that would work (in terms of being relevant) to copy and paste to a hundred addresses. So I guess I need to make each email uniqueā€¦

Exactly!

Introduce yourself, ā€˜Hi Mark, Iā€™m Sarah - Jacob gave me your email, please let me know if youā€™d prefer a Zoom or phonecall. Iā€™m reaching out to dealerships to show you what Iā€™ve been working on that can hopefully help you out.ā€™

Anything to differentiate yourself from what I pasted in the above examples will be much better for them actually reading the email.

How do I pull off the ā€œ____ gave me your emailā€ if I scraped it off their website? I donā€™t want to lie about it because theyā€™ll catch up eventually (plus itā€™s not right), and saying something like ā€œa third partyā€ sounds super sketch.

If I could sum up my advise, itā€™s donā€™t scrape for contacts- oftentimes youā€™ll end up with the wrong person because their title appeared to have them in a different role than they actually have, for example. I recommend simply starting small. If you know ANYONE at a lical dealer, talk to them. Ask them who is the best contact, and if they can introduce you. Use that to get referrals to the next group of dealers, and so on. I truly believe that e-blastung 500 dealers, even with personalized messaging, is not the way to go and will mostly likely have your email ignored.

In 15 years, only 1 cold call got a sale out of me - because I thought the number was someone I knew and I answered, and he was friendly and had clearly done his research.

I have never once bought from a cold email.

But I get introduced over email, phone, zoom, etc from numerous other people who seek me out - they are much more successful, and they leverage common connections in my industry, as well as research.

You should also see if there are trade shows in it area directed towards your market. Havkng a nooth, or even going around and introducing yourself would be very helpful to putting a real person behind your product. In this day of everyrhing automated and digital, that genuine connection still holds true, at least when youā€™re first starting out and making a name for yourself.

Makes sense. Aim for personal connections, start small. Thank you!

Would it also make sense to find individuals who are willing to help me build my portifolio?
