Want user to be able to hide portions of text, replaced by icon… similar to “… read more”

You can do this by using “truncated to”. For example, if you are showing a User’s biography field, you can truncate that to show the first 200 characters as a preview. Then the read more button could lead to a page to the User’s profile (or anything you choose of course).
