Hi there - I have an app that manages an order form for my business that will be having some national exposure on a TV show hopefully sometime this Fall. We’re expecting a large, temporary, influx of traffic the night it airs and I’m trying to get everything ready.
Traffic is estimated to be as high as ~10k visitors the first hour, and ~50k the first week. I’m on the Personal (legacy) plan and trying to figure out what I need to do to get ready and ensure it doesn’t crash.
Kidding aside, I would bet my car that you are going to hit capacity (and hit it quickly) on the Personal plan, and that is obviously the last thing you are going to want. So, you are going to have no choice but to upgrade to a workload unit plan, and then it’s just about trying to figure out which plan/tier will best suit your needs. On one of the new plans, your app shouldn’t crash, but you will want to try to understand which plan/tier will minimize your costs. If you haven’t seen the subscription planner, play around with it and see if you can get some ballpark numbers based on what usage looks like in your app because even ballpark will be better than going in blind.
That makes sense, thanks for the info. I’ve been resisting migrating to the new plan structure for many reasons and hoped I could get by with the old one. Sounds like I need to start caring about workload units a whole lot more now
We just field tested this last week! Here’s some data:
I run a film festival and we released our decision letters for thousands of films at once. A lot of people logging in at the exact same time, similar to you, to check their results, and the personal legacy plan held up very nicely.
8,000-ish views in the first hour, 10,000 total that day (we released letters at 9pm), then around 5,000 total the next day, then a decrease back to normalcy. What we did is “boost” the application (you can do it up to three times) before that first hour.
If I remember correctly, a boost only lasts for an hour, though, right? So, that might help with the ~10k visitors in the first hour, but I’m not sure how it would help with the ~50k across the first week. I don’t know… if it was me, I don’t think I would trust boosts on the legacy Personal plan to handle what sounds like a pretty important event, but maybe I am not remembering correctly how that legacy plan stuff works.
